Representatives from University of Malaya’s Faculty of Law emerged as Champions of the inaugural Cyber Law Moot Competition (CLMC 2017) organized by the International Islamic University Malaysia’s Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyah of Laws (AIKOL) in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Held from the 24th to 26th of February 2017 at the Law Faculty of International Islamic University Malaysia, the competition was centered on prevalent cyber law issues such as the right to privacy, e-commerce contract, internet defamation as well as the standard of care in cyber security. The moot problem was drafted by Dr Sonny Zulhuda, a distinguished expert on cyber law and an Assistant Professor of AIKOL.

The team from UM consisting of Loh Jing Rou (3rd Year Law), Ashley Tay Suet Yee (3rd Year Law), Loh Heng Yeong (2nd Year Law), Lam Huan Qi (2nd Year Law) and Yeap Yee Lin (1st Year Law) saw their passion and hard work rewarded when they were declared champions on a 3 to 2 split decision by a panel of esteemed judges consisting of High Court Judges Tuan Azizul Azmi Bin Adnan and Puan Noorin binti Badarudin, Judicial Commissioner of the High Court, Datuk Wong Kian Kheong, Partner of Messrs Christopher & Lee Ong, Mr. Deepak Pillai and Deputy Director of the Prosecution Department of MCMC, Mr Nazrul Nizam in an intense final round against a team from IIUM.

Asides from clinching the championship title, the UM team also received the Best Memorial Award, and two of our oralists, Ashley Tay and Loh Jing Rou was crowned the ‘Best Oralist for the Preliminary Rounds’ and the ‘Best Oralist for the Final Round’ respectively.

The team attributes their success to  the endless support from the faculty, especially from Associate Professor Dr. Johan Shamsuddin Bin Hj Sabaruddin, Dean of the University of Malaya Law Faculty, Dr. Nadhratul Wardah Hj Salman, the Deputy Dean, Mr. Steward Manley, the Moot Coordinator and team coach Marcus Lee Min Lun (Final Year Law) throughout their whole journey.

In addition to that, the team would also like to express their gratitude to fellow alumni of the faculty for adjudicating their practice sessions and providing them with guidance and constructive feedback which helped them to grow and improve.

“As a team mostly comprised of first-time mooters, we initially thought that winning the competition was a long shot. I believe that our team surely wouldn’t have been able to progress this far without our coach, Marcus’s dedication on steering our team on the right path. Thank you, Marcus!” – Loh Jing Rou
