​Person of The Month (December) - Hanani Rahman

          Hanani Rahman was the President of the University of Malaya Law Society for the academic year of 2015/2016. A familiar face around the faculty, she is mostly known as a highly capable individual who is a veteran in a myriad of activities and has contributed significantly towards the university.
 
          Although she is very active and has been involved in a wide range of diverse activities, both in the Faculty, such as having served on the committee of UM Mock Trial, ALSA’s Student Exchange Programme, ALSA’s UM National Forum and the Orientation Week Committee, and outside Faculty, such as having hosted events such as Malam Senior Junior, Frenster and Malam Apresiasi Gemilang for the 12th College, she was most committed to the University of Malaya Law Society.

​      In her first year, she served in the publicity bureau before ascending to the position of vice secretary in her second year. Throughout both years, she played crucial roles in all the activities hosted by the Law Society. In her third year, her commitment and dedication were rewarded when she was appointed as the President the Law Society. Even today, even though she had passed on her responsibility as a President, she is always there to help out in any events, volunteering to assist whenever she could such as in planning the choreography of performances or checking the protocols for an event.
 
      When asked about her proudest achievement during her tenure, she cited the personal relationships that she had formed and the growth that she shared with her committee members; “My tenure in UMLS was definitely not the best tenure that the faculty has ever experienced. However, as a President, I'm proud to say that my proudest achievement is to be able to stick together with my hi-comm and exco members. They're always around whenever I needed help and company. They're both colleagues and friends.” 
 
      According to Hanani, serving the faculty helped her grow personally in her ability to communicate, interact and form relationships with other people. Being a workforce in any activity requires her to work not only with her fellow students but also students from other universities or administration officers in the faculty itself who come from all walks of life. Besides that, she has also learned to work professionally as teaming up with different people with different capacity and talents requires her to work without getting too personal at work if any conflicts arise.  In fact, it is essential to know how to deal with these situations proactively and properly to avoid negative emotions from escalating.

         Owing to her vast experiences, Hanani has a piece of humble advice for the juniors. She encourages students who would like to serve the faculty to participate in any way they can. She mentions that there are many ways to contribute such as in terms of energy and manpower, by volunteering to be a part of an organizing committee or to contribute through academic achievements, such as participation in Moots competitions, or even writing a piece of article for UM Law Review. She also mentioned that attending an event held in the faculty is a way of contributing to an event, noting that sometimes the best way to gain benefits to oneself is to first give back as every activity that you take part in can help you to become a better person.
 
        In her final year, she is working on the 12th edition of University of Malaya’s Law Career Convention as one of the Vice Presidents and is planning to join another ALSA’s Student Exchange Program for the last time, if possible. She is glad to see law students taking part in activities other than just studying. Last but not least, she would like to leave a note for her previous board members in the Law Society, which she considers her greatest legacy; “They're the best committee I could’ve ever asked for. I apologize if I’ve ever failed to be the best for them. I hope that they've learned a lot last year and definitely as a senior, I'm proud to see where they are right now. They've matured tremendously. I am also grateful that they're still serving the faculty with their best means as members of the faculty. I wish them all the best for their future endeavors!”
